Frigid malice indeed. The high-profile arrests, court cases and tabloid splashes all fed into the growing hatred of homosexuality in society, the law and the press. Mr Lucas’s 1961 and 1963 diaries are awash, as we’ve seen, with reports of heightened police activity. And their methods are becoming ever more sinister.

9 December 1961 (Saturday):

The Coffee-House plainclothes policemen have been sitting in there, noting who comes and goes, and with whom; and they have employed a stool pigeon, a nark, in the shape of one tall unpleasant young queen who has been passing information to Savile Row police station, and has had more than one arrested for soliciting. (Just so, in the religious persecutions, have the police employed spies to discover where mass is said, for example, what priests are about, who harbours them, and so on.)
